If you are a university student seeking further specialization in your studies, it is important to know that companies value studies abroad, as well as knowledge of other languages and experience in different work environments. Therefore, in addition to the option of pursuing a master’s or postgraduate degree at a university in Spain, you have the possibility of enrolling in a business school abroad and applying for an Erasmus Mundus master’s scholarship.
This type of university program is jointly offered by several international higher education institutions.
What are the requirements for obtaining an Erasmus Mundus scholarship? Thanks to our experience in hosting exchange university students, we can explain everything you need to know about this higher education option.
What is the Erasmus Mundus scholarship?
The Erasmus Mundus program aims to promote the exchange of students, professors, and researchers among different universities worldwide.
This educational program is based on a proposal from universities or higher education centers to collaborate on postgraduate courses or joint projects between different universities.
The objectives of the program focus on improving the quality of higher education in Europe and one of its main lines of action is the promotion of dialogue and understanding among different cultures through cooperation with third countries.
Erasmus Mundus master’s courses are included in the International Studies Program, which is jointly offered by an international consortium of higher education institutions.
These studies must be carried out in at least two of the countries participating in the program.
The Erasmus Mundus master’s course is a higher education program developed to meet the needs of the Member States of the European Union and other associated countries for the development of human resources and research and innovation activities in Europe.
Its goal is also to contribute to greater student mobility to strengthen cooperation in European society.

Most consortia require that applications be submitted between October and January for programs starting the following academic year.

- Health
- Arts and Humanities
- Social, Legal, and Business Sciences
- Science, Mathematics, and Computer Science
Erasmus Mundus master’s programs last between 1 and 2 years, depending on the program, and consist of 60, 90, or 120 ECTS credits, depending on the duration and chosen curriculum. This type of master can be pursued by any student in the world, provided they have a higher education degree.
What degree do these studies award?
Upon successful completion of the study program, a joint degree is awarded. This is a single degree granted on behalf of at least two higher education institutions or the EMJM consortium, or several degrees, i.e., at least two degrees issued by two higher education institutions of the consortium.
The joint degree is issued by all the associated institutions that have contributed to its content and can verify that the student has met their academic standards upon completing their studies.
The new joint degree is awarded in addition to any other relevant qualifications the student already possesses.
How can I obtain the Erasmus Mundus scholarship?
If you want to study abroad, Erasmus+ is a great program that can help you do so. The European Commission has created this scholarship program which will fund your studies if you apply for an Erasmus+ master’s.
To receive an Erasmus+ scholarship and pursue this type of master’s, the student must be admitted to the program for which they have applied for the scholarship and then be selected to receive the MCEM scholarship.
This scholarship covers the student’s participation expenses, such as tuition fees, library and laboratory expenses, or mandatory insurance.
It also includes a contribution to travel and installation expenses, as well as a monthly allowance for the entire period of the study program.
The total amount of the scholarship can vary depending on the course duration and the students’ nationality, as scholarships for non-EU students are higher. At least 75% of the scholarships are awarded to candidates from associated countries.
To apply, check the list of Erasmus Mundus master’s programs that can be funded with these scholarships, available at eacea.ec.europa.eu
Once you have received official confirmation of your participation in an Erasmus Mundus master’s program, you can apply for a visa at the embassy of the country where your center is located, if necessary. The Erasmus Mundus International Office will inform you about the arrangements.
